The continued acceptance of unsupported beliefs have plagued orthodontic practice for over 100 years. Regrettably, the relatively new emphasis on “evidence based orthodontics” has done little to change this unfortunate situation in clinical practice. In fact, a close scrutiny of what is good clinical research including what has become a “tyranny” of prospective randomized clinical trials relegating retrospective observational studies to being “children of a lesser God” will be discussed as it impacts upon clinical practice.
The etiology and treatment of the Class II malocclusion, ectopic canines, unilateral functional crossbites, and other clinical entities will be explored as well as the significant current shift to nonextraction treatment in clinical practice.
A continuation of the morning discussion as well as the presentation of orthodontic gadgets, gizmos and appliances that have shown to have a significant benefit in clinical practice.
New appliances that will soon be introduced to the U.S. practicing orthodontist will be shown that intuitively offer a benefit to our patients and practices will be presented.
